Safety tips for travellers

Use StayKedarnath safely

A journey to the Himalayas is a test of devotion and physical endurance. StayKedarnath is dedicated to ensuring your Yatra is secure from online fraud and physically safe in extreme high-altitude conditions.

Beware of Helicopter Scams

Fake websites and Whatsapp numbers frequently scam pilgrims offering VIP helicopter tickets. The ONLY official portal to book Pawan Hans or other helicopter tickets for Kedarnath is through IRCTC (heliyatra.irctc.co.in). StayKedarnath will never ask for UPI payments for chopper tickets.

Mandatory Biometric Registration

Before commencing your trek from Sonprayag or Gaurikund, you must complete your Chardham Yatra Biometric Registration. This ensures your safety and helps local authorities and the SDRF track pilgrims in case of unforeseen extreme weather or landslides.

Altitude Medical Preparedness

Kedarnath temple is at an altitude of 3,583 meters (11,755 ft). Pilgrims often suffer from Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS). If you have a history of heart disease or asthma, strictly consult a doctor. Stay hydrated, walk slowly on the 16km trek, and carry prescribed medicines.

Choosing a safe destination

Verify your property's distance

Make sure you know exactly if your homestay is in Phata, Guptkashi, or Sonprayag. Traffic limits often halt vehicles 10-15km before the trek base during peak rush.

Monsoon travel warnings

The months of July and August experience heavy rainfall and frequent landslides. We strongly advise checking StayKedarnath's live weather widget and Uttarakhand Police advisories.

Inspect basic amenities early

Once you reach your booked homestay, confirm hot water timings and power backup. In Himalayan villages, power banks are essential for emergency SDRF contact.

Beware of unregistered guides and mules

When negotiating at Gaurikund, only hire registered vendors wearing official ID cards. Unregistered guides pose a severe safety hazard on the treacherous 16km trek.

Emergency Contact Protocols

Always keep the Uttarakhand Police (112), SDRF, and Women Helpline numbers saved offline. Mobile networks are completely unreliable beyond Phata.

Mountain Medical Readiness

The oxygen saturation levels at 11,755 ft are significantly lower than at base camp. Our verified partners are equipped with professional pulse oximeters and secondary oxygen supplies to ensure your physiological safety during the ascent.

Critical high-altitude medical protocols:

  • Acclimatization Rest: Do not attempt the 16km trek in a single continuous push. Mandatory hydration breaks at Rambara and Lincholi checkpoints are essential.
  • Diagnosing HAPE: Differentiate standard exhaustion from High Altitude Pulmonary Edema (HAPE). Persistent dry coughing, bubbling sounds in the chest, and blue lips require immediate descent.
  • Pharmaceutical Caution: Diamox (Acetazolamide) is commonly used for acclimatization, but it must be prescribed by a physician. Self-medicating during the steep Rambara stairs can lead to severe dehydration.
  • Oxygen Stations: Utilize the six MRP (Medical Relief Posts) stationed along the newly constructed trekking route for immediate O2 administration before calling the SDRF.
