Kedarnath is one of India's holiest and most visited pilgrimage sites, welcoming hundreds of thousands of pilgrims each year safely. However, there are things to be aware of:
Weather-related risks:
- Cloudbursts and landslides can temporarily close the route during July–August monsoons
- Check the SDRF Uttarakhand official website or local news for route status before traveling
- Never trek if a warning has been issued
Altitude sickness:
- Kedarnath is at 3,583m — some people experience headaches, nausea, or dizziness
- Ascend slowly, drink plenty of water, and take a rest day if you feel unwell
- Carry Diamox (consult a doctor first)
General safety:
- Register at the biometric registration counter at Gaurikund (mandatory)
- Keep emergency contacts saved — local police (Kedarnath): +91-1364-263090
- Carry sufficient cash — digital payments are limited above Gaurikund
- Follow all NDMA and state government advisories
