This emerald gem in the Garhwal Himalayas is famed for its tranquil waters that offer a spectacular, mirror-like reflection of the Chaukhamba massif, along with other prominent peaks like Kedarnath, Nilkantha, Bandarpoonch, and Kalanag. Surrounded by dense forests of oak and rhododendron, the lake is part of the Kedarnath Musk Deer Sanctuary, boasting rich biodiversity and vibrant avian life. Its pristine environment makes it an idyllic spot for nature enthusiasts, trekkers, and photographers seeking unparalleled Himalayan vistas and starry night skies.
Significance
Deoria Tal is steeped in ancient Hindu mythology and local folklore, earning its name 'Deoria' from the belief that Hindu gods (Devas) once bathed in its sacred waters. It is also widely believed to be the mythical 'Indra Sarovar' mentioned in the Puranas. The most famous legend connects Deoria Tal to the epic Mahabharata, identifying it as the very lake where the Pandavas were questioned by the Yaksha (Lord Yama in disguise) during their exile. Local tales also speak of celestial dancer Menaka practicing her art by the lake's perfect reflections and a giant golden serpent, Sheshnaag, guarding its depths.
The trek to Deoria Tal typically begins from Sari Village, located approximately 13 km from Ukhimath. The well-marked uphill trail spans about 2.5 km to 3 km and takes roughly 1 to 1.5 hours to complete, winding through picturesque rhododendron and alpine forests.
